Mariachi is more than music. It is culture, identity, history, family, and a powerful way to bring people together. The ABQ Mariachi Project exists because we believe this tradition deserves a future.
For generations, mariachi has been passed down through families and close-knit communities. However, mariachi culture can be very reserved, making it difficult for young people outside those circles to find opportunities to learn. Many children grow up hearing mariachi at celebrations but never get the chance to pick up an instrument and become part of the tradition.
Today, mariachi music is at risk of dying. As older generations step away from performing and fewer young musicians learn traditional songs, techniques, and styles, we risk losing an important part of our cultural heritage.
The ABQ Mariachi Project was created to change that.
We are opening the doors of mariachi to the youth of Albuquerque by creating a welcoming community where students can learn, grow, and belong. We teach more than instruments—we teach students to listen and learn music by ear, understand the meaning behind the songs, respect the tradition, and proudly represent their culture.
Mariachi tells the stories of everyday people—love, family, celebration, heartbreak, struggle, and hope. It is music for the common people, and its power comes from bringing people together.
Our purpose is to preserve this living tradition and inspire the next generation to carry it forward.
